Before group chats and feeds, there were chat rooms: a room full of people, all talking at once, and you could walk in and say hello. They're still one of the easiest ways to meet new people online. Here's how they work in 2026.
What is a chat room?
A chat room is a live conversation that anyone in the room can join. Unlike a group chat, you don't need to be invited and you don't need to know anyone. Rooms usually have a topic (music, sport, a region), and you can see who's in the room right now.
When you click with someone, you take it to a private message, and if you want to keep in touch, you add them to your contact list.
The rooms on Chatroom
All of these are free:
- General: The lobby, New here, the Chill-out lounge and Night owls.
- Throwback: Class of 2004, Noughties music, Old phones and dial-up, Saturday morning telly, and Emo corner.
- Around NZ: a room for each island.
- By age: 20-somethings, 30-somethings and Over 40s.
- Interests: music, movies and TV, sport (rugby, cricket, football and more), gaming, World of Warcraft, fitness, the outdoors, food and drink, cars and bikes.
- Life: Parents, and Advice and venting.
Premium members also get the Premium lounges: the VIP lounge, the Throwback lounge and Trivia night. See every room.
How to join a conversation
- Say hello to the room. "evening all :)" is perfect.
- Read for a minute to see what's being talked about.
- Reply with @name so the person knows you're talking to them.
- Ask a question. "Best song of 2004, go" never fails in the Throwback rooms.

Staying safe
- Keep your full name, address and number to yourself.
- Never send money to someone you've met online.
- Block and report anyone who makes you uncomfortable; it takes two clicks.
- Links are blocked in rooms, which keeps out spam and dodgy sites.
