Chat room etiquette in 2026: how to say hi without being weird
Better openers than 'hey', how to join a conversation that's already going, when to take it to a private message, and the unwritten rules of a good chat room.

Chat rooms run on a few unwritten rules. Here they are, written down.
Walking in
- Say hello to the room. "evening all :)" is perfect.
- Read for a minute before diving in, so you know what's being talked about.
- Don't take it personally if nobody answers straight away. Rooms ebb and flow.
Better openers than "hey"
Give people something to reply to:
- Answer whatever's being discussed.
- Ask the room a question: "best song of 2004, go".
- Mention something on someone's profile card (click their name to see it).
- In the Throwback rooms, a good "remember when…" never fails.
Joining in
- Use @names when you reply to someone, so they see it.
- Keep it on topic in topic rooms. The lobby is for everything else.
- No walls of text. Short and often beats long and once.
- Links aren't allowed in rooms, which keeps spam out. Share them privately if the other person agrees.
Taking it private
If you're getting on with someone, click their name and choose Send a message, or Add to contacts so you can find each other again. A good line: "want to keep chatting in private?"
If they say no, or don't reply, that's fine. Move on.
Things that get you blocked
- Messaging someone again after they've said no.
- Being rude, pushy, or creepy.
- Spam, scams, or asking anyone for money.
- Sharing anyone's private details or photos.
Everyone can Block and Report with two clicks, and real moderators deal with reports. More in our community rules and chat safety tips.
And remember
It's meant to be fun. Use the emoticons. Send a nudge (to a friend). Be the person who makes the room better.
