How to start a group chat on Chatroom (and keep it alive)

Start a group chat with up to 20 contacts, invite people, rename it and keep it going. Plus a few ideas for what to do with your group.

Remember adding people to a conversation one by one until it was chaos? Group chats on Chatroom are a little tidier.

Start one

  1. Open your contact list.
  2. Under Group chats, click Start a group chat…
  3. Give it a name and tick the contacts you want to invite (up to 20 people).

Everyone you invite gets an invitation and joins when they accept. New people only see messages sent after they join, so nobody reads the old gossip.

Run it

  • The owner can rename the group and remove people.
  • Anyone can leave at any time.
  • Nudges work in groups too. Use them wisely.

Ideas for your group

  • The old school friends. Find each other in the Class of 2004 room and bring the group back together.
  • Game night. Plan your next co-op session or LAN party.
  • The sports crew. Live commentary for the weekend's game.
  • Quiz club. Take turns asking questions. Premium members can take it to the Trivia night lounge.
  • Book or film club. One pick a month, one big chat.

Keep it alive

  • Give it a fun name. Renaming it every week is half the fun.
  • Have a regular time: Thursday night throwbacks, Sunday morning catch-ups.
  • Don't let it go silent. One good "remember when…" brings everyone back.

Free members can have up to five contacts, so for bigger groups you'll want Premium (free for three months when you join now). Sign up free.
